IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Unmarried Couples
IVF is the artificially induced fertilisation and implantation of the fertilised embryo in the uterus.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Unmarried Couples
Every year, approximately 300,000 babies are born worldwide through this method.
The success rate is 60% for women under 40 years old. IVF treatment can also be performed at advanced ages, but the success rate decreases to as low as 20% for women over 40.
How is IVF Performed?
The treatment process consists of several stages. Firstly, egg production is supported with various medications. During this period, tests are conducted to determine the individual's body mass index and the dosage of the medication to enhance egg production. If the person has undergone IVF treatment before, the medication dosages and the number of eggs collected from the previous treatment are also taken into account.
During egg retrieval, mild sedatives are given to the prospective mother to ensure she does not experience any pain. The egg retrieval process can take up to 30 minutes. The collected samples are immediately sent to the laboratory. After this stage, prospective mothers may experience cramping and pressure.
On the same day, sperm samples are also collected from the prospective father and promptly sent to the laboratory. In cases where there is no sperm in the semen, surgical retrieval of sperm can be performed.
In the laboratory, sperm and eggs are combined for fertilization. Two methods can be used here. One is the classical method, where the samples are brought together in a prepared environment in the laboratory, and fertilization is expected to occur. The other method is Microinjection (ICSI), where the sperm is injected into the egg. This method is usually used when there is a problem with sperm quality or quantity.
Once fertilization occurs, the embryo is monitored. After determining the appropriate time, it is transferred to the uterus. The timing for the transfer is determined considering the woman's age and previous unsuccessful attempts.
After this procedure, prospective mothers may experience some side effects, such as:
- -Constipation
- -Lower back and pelvic pain resembling menstrual cramps
- -Feeling bloated
- -Cramps
- -Fluid discharge after the procedure
The prospective mother should avoid sexual intercourse until the pregnancy test, refrain from smoking (as smoking can reduce the chances of pregnancy by 50%), and should not take any medication without consulting her doctor. In addition, if any pain is felt, it is important to consult the doctor immediately.
Pregnancy Test After IVF Treatment
A pregnancy test is conducted 2 weeks after the embryo is transferred to the uterus. If the test result is positive, the condition of the gestational sac is observed through ultrasound examination 10 days later.
