It is the branch of medicine which deals with the functions and diseases specific to women, especially those affecting the reproductive system.

What is a IVF treatment?

During in vitro fertilisation procedure an egg is fertilised by sperm under the special labrotory conditions. The procedure starts with hormone therapy which is followed by egg collection. Then under the laboratory condition embryos are created to transfer them to the vagina.

Who can be a candidate for IVF treatment?

Not everyone can receive benefit from In vitro fertilization. When ovaries can not produce healthy eggs, the success rate is very low.

In some medical conditions patients have chance to receive benefit from IVF treatment, these conditions  may include:

  • Women with tubal problems
  • Women with endometriosis
  • Women with polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Women with anomalous ovulation cycles
  • Women with some certain hormon diseases
  • Male infertility (low number of sperms, slow movement of sperms)

Steps of IVF treatment:

  • Step 1 : Hormone therapy
  • Step 2: Egg collection
  • Step 3: Collection of  a sperm sample
  • Step 4: Fertilization in the Labortory ( ICSI if needed )
  • Step 5: Embryo Transfer

What is ICSI?

The ICSI method is usually used  when the male partner has infertility and today also it may used for all types of fertilisations. During this method a single sperm is directly injected into an egg.

What is a frozen embryo?

Embryos can be frozen to be used for the future IVF treatments. You can talk with your doctor to learn the details of procedure.

Step-by-Step IVF Treatment

You should stay average of 21 days for treatment in İstanbul

This treatment that does not require to stay in the hospital. Your stay will be organized in a hotel close to the hospital and your treatment will be started step by step as follows.

The average in vitro fertilization procedure, including 21-day hotel accommodation, is around 4500 - 5000 USD on average.

Beginning: Education

The first step of IVF treatment consists of the education provided by the IVF coordinator. At this stage, information is given about the procedures, the plan of treatment and how it will be carried out, you will be taught how to take your own medicines and necessary approval forms are signed.

First Stage: Stimulation of Ovaries and Monitoring of Egg Development

The basis of IVF treatment is the complete control of the ovaries of the woman. For this purpose, some drug treatments are applied.

These drugs (nasal spray or subcutaneous injection) prevent you from ovulating before the desired time. You will be given the necessary training to use yourself.

The success of IVF treatment depends on the large number of eggs produced in the female ovaries. For this purpose, the ovaries, which are kept under control with the aforementioned drugs, are stimulated with drugs that stimulate egg development. These drugs are subcutaneous or intramuscular injections.

The stimulation of the ovaries with these drugs takes about 10 days. During this process, you need to be checked several times to monitor your egg development.

In these controls, your ultrasonography is performed and if necessary, the hormone levels in your blood are checked and dose adjustment of your drugs is performed.

Second Stage: Egg Collection

During the follow-up of the egg development, on the day it is determined that a sufficient number of eggs mature, the eggs are injected to complete the last stage of development.

Egg collection is scheduled for 36 hours after this last drug injection.

During the collection of the eggs, sedatives, sleeping drugs can be given or the procedure can be performed under full anesthesia.

The procedure is similar to vaginal ultrasonography performed during your egg developmental follow-up. The only difference is that a needle attached to the vaginal ultrasound device passes through the vagina and collects the eggs inside your ovaries.

The average duration of the procedure is 30 minutes. Fertilization with sperm cells is carried out on the day the eggs are collected. After 2-3 hours of rest after the collection of eggs, the couple is discharged from the hospital.

After this stage of in vitro fertilization, double information is given about the drugs to be used.

Third: Laboratory Operations

One day after the collection of eggs, double information is given as to how many eggs are normally fertilized.

After this stage, normally fertilized eggs are monitored in the laboratory for 2 to 5 days, and at the appropriate time, the most qualified ones are selected and placed back into the womb. Double information is given as to when this placement will take place.

Fourth and Final Stage: Embryo Transfer

Before embryo transfer, which is the final stage of IVF treatment, information is given on the number and quality of the embryos to be transferred double.

Embryo transfer is no different than a simple examination. No anesthesia is required. Before the transfer, the only desired mother is to drink water and fill the bladder. This is because the transfer process is performed under ultrasonographic observation and the bladder needs to be filled to some extent.

During the transfer process, a catheter loaded with embryos is passed through the vagina and through the cervix and placed into the uterus and the embryos are released into the uterus.

After resting in the hospital for 3-4 hours after the transfer, the couple is sent to the hotel and the woman is asked to spend that day relaxing.

To support the development of pregnancy, progesterone, estrogen and / or other supplements may be initiated after collection of eggs or transfer of embryos.

It is possible to find out the result of IVF treatment by a pregnancy test 14 days after the transfer.
