What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the world's most widely performed refractive eye surgery. It corrects myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser, allowing light to focus correctly on the retina without glasses or contact lenses.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, more than 40 million LASIK procedures have been performed globally. Modern wavefront-guided and femtosecond laser platforms have pushed the success rate above 96 percent for achieving 20/20 vision or better, making LASIK one of the safest elective procedures in medicine.

At MedProper, we partner with a JCI-accredited ophthalmology centre in Istanbul equipped with the latest excimer and femtosecond laser systems. Whether you are considering LASIK, PRK, or smart lens implantation, this page provides a comprehensive guide to your options, costs, and what to expect when you choose Turkey for your vision correction.

How Much Does LASIK Cost in Turkey in 2026?

Cost is the primary driver behind the growing trend of laser eye surgery tourism to Turkey. The table below shows MedProper's 2026 pricing for all refractive and lens-based vision correction procedures.

Important note on eye surgery pricing: Unlike MedProper's cosmetic surgery packages, eye surgery prices cover the procedure and clinical care only. There is no hospital overnight stay required — LASIK, PRK, and smart lens procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. Hotel accommodation is arranged separately if needed, and MedProper can assist with booking partnered hotels at preferential rates. Smart lens prices are quoted per eye; most patients have both eyes treated on the same day or on consecutive days.

Turkey vs UK vs USA: Laser Eye Surgery Price Comparison

The cost difference between Turkey and Western Europe or North America is substantial for every category of vision correction.

Even when you factor in return flights — typically EUR 80 to 200 from London, or EUR 350 to 600 from New York — and two to three nights of hotel accommodation at EUR 60 to 120 per night, the total cost of travelling to Istanbul for eye surgery remains significantly lower than having the same procedure at home. For LASIK in particular, the all-in cost including travel often comes to less than half the UK clinic fee.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery: LASIK vs PRK vs SMILE

Not every patient is a candidate for every laser procedure. Understanding the differences helps you have a more informed conversation with your ophthalmologist during your pre-operative assessment.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK is the gold standard for refractive surgery. A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap (approximately 100-120 microns), which is lifted to expose the underlying stroma. An excimer laser then reshapes the corneal tissue to correct the refractive error, and the flap is repositioned. No stitches are needed.

Best for: Myopia up to -10.00 D, hyperopia up to +4.00 D, astigmatism up to 5.00 D.

Advantages:

  • Rapid visual recovery — most patients see clearly within 4 to 6 hours
  • Minimal discomfort during and after the procedure
  • Proven track record with decades of clinical data
  • Both eyes treated in one session lasting 10 to 15 minutes total

Limitations:

  • Requires sufficient corneal thickness (minimum ~500 microns)
  • Not suitable for patients with keratoconus or very thin corneas
  • Dry eye symptoms are common in the first 3 to 6 months
  • The corneal flap, while stable, never fully bonds back to the same strength

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

PRK was the first laser vision correction procedure and remains the preferred alternative when LASIK is not suitable. Instead of creating a flap, the surgeon removes the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) entirely. The excimer laser then reshapes the exposed stroma. The epithelium regenerates naturally over three to five days.

Best for: Patients with thin corneas, those in contact sports or military roles, mild to moderate myopia up to -8.00 D.

Advantages:

  • No corneal flap means no flap-related complications
  • Preserves more corneal tissue than LASIK
  • Lower risk of post-operative dry eye long-term
  • Better suited for patients with naturally thin corneas

Limitations:

  • Slower visual recovery — clear vision may take 5 to 14 days
  • Moderate discomfort for the first 2 to 3 days as the epithelium heals
  • Slightly higher short-term risk of corneal haze (mitigated with mitomycin-C)
  • Bandage contact lens required for 4 to 5 days post-operatively

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

SMILE is a newer, minimally invasive alternative to LASIK. Rather than creating a flap and ablating tissue with an excimer laser, the femtosecond laser creates a small disc of tissue (lenticule) within the intact cornea. The surgeon removes this lenticule through a 2-4 mm incision, changing the corneal shape.

Best for: Myopia from -1.00 to -10.00 D, with or without mild astigmatism.

Advantages:

  • Flapless — no risk of flap displacement
  • Smaller incision preserves more corneal nerves, potentially reducing dry eye
  • Greater corneal biomechanical stability post-surgery
  • Quick procedure — approximately 25 seconds of laser time per eye

Limitations:

  • Cannot correct hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Slightly slower visual stabilisation compared to LASIK in the first 48 hours
  • Enhancement procedures are more complex if needed
  • Requires specific laser platform (VisuMax by Carl Zeiss)

Why Choose Turkey for Laser Eye Surgery?

Turkey has become one of Europe's leading destinations for refractive and lens-based eye surgery, and the reasons extend well beyond price.

World-Class Ophthalmology Infrastructure

Istanbul's private ophthalmology centres are equipped with the same excimer and femtosecond laser platforms used at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London or the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. The equipment is not second-tier — it is identical technology from manufacturers including Alcon (WaveLight), Carl Zeiss (VisuMax), and Schwind (Amaris). Turkey's ophthalmology centres also invest in the latest diagnostic equipment: corneal topography (Pentacam), wavefront aberrometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and specular microscopy for endothelial cell counts.

Surgeon Volume and Experience

Turkish ophthalmologists perform significantly higher volumes of refractive surgery than their Western European counterparts. A senior LASIK surgeon in Istanbul may perform 1,500 to 3,000 procedures per year, compared to 200 to 500 at a busy UK practice. This volume translates directly into refined technique, faster identification of complications, and greater confidence in managing complex or borderline cases.

MedProper's partner ophthalmologists hold fellowships in refractive and cataract surgery from internationally recognised programmes, are members of ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons), and have published in peer-reviewed journals. They operate at JCI-accredited facilities with dedicated refractive surgery suites.

JCI Accreditation and Safety Standards

Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation is the global gold standard for hospital quality and patient safety. MedProper's partner ophthalmology centre holds current JCI accreditation, meaning it meets the same clinical governance, infection control, and patient safety protocols required of leading hospitals in the UK, USA, and EU. Turkey has more JCI-accredited hospitals than any country in Europe.

Why Is Eye Surgery So Much Cheaper in Turkey?

The price difference is not about quality — it reflects structural economic factors:

  • Lower operating costs: Facility rental, nursing staff, and administrative overheads are 60 to 70 percent lower in Istanbul than in London or New York.
  • Favourable exchange rate: The Turkish lira has depreciated significantly against the euro, pound, and dollar, amplifying savings for international patients.
  • Bulk purchasing power: High patient volumes allow Turkish clinics to negotiate substantially lower prices on laser consumables, IOL lenses, and surgical supplies.
  • Government support: Turkey's Ministry of Health actively promotes medical tourism and provides regulatory frameworks that make it efficient for international patients to access care.

The same surgeon using the same Alcon WaveLight excimer laser on the same patient would charge two to three times more at a Harley Street clinic than at a JCI-accredited centre in Istanbul. The clinical outcome would be indistinguishable.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Not everyone qualifies for LASIK, and a responsible ophthalmologist will never proceed without confirming your suitability. The pre-operative assessment at MedProper's partner centre includes corneal topography, pachymetry (thickness measurement), wavefront analysis, pupil size measurement, tear film evaluation, and a comprehensive eye health examination.

You May Be a Good LASIK Candidate If:

  • You are at least 18 years old (ideally 21+) with a stable prescription for at least 12 months
  • Your myopia is between -1.00 and -10.00 dioptres
  • Your hyperopia is up to +4.00 dioptres
  • Your astigmatism is up to 5.00 dioptres
  • Your corneal thickness is at least 500 microns
  • You do not have keratoconus, glaucoma, or significant cataracts
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have uncontrolled autoimmune conditions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, lupus)

When LASIK Is Not Suitable

If your cornea is too thin, your prescription too high, or your corneal topography shows irregularities, your ophthalmologist may recommend PRK (which preserves more tissue) or, for older patients with presbyopia or early cataracts, a smart lens procedure instead. MedProper never recommends a procedure that is not clinically appropriate — if LASIK is not right for you, we will advise the best alternative.

Beyond LASIK: Smart Lens, Trifocal and EDOF Surgery in Turkey

Laser vision correction works by reshaping the cornea, but it cannot address presbyopia (age-related loss of near focus) or cataracts. For patients over 45 — or those with prescriptions outside the treatable range of LASIK — intraocular lens (IOL) replacement offers a permanent solution.

What Is Smart Lens Surgery?

Smart lens surgery, also known as refractive lens exchange (RLE) or clear lens extraction, involves removing the eye's natural crystalline lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is functionally identical to modern cataract surgery but is performed electively to correct vision rather than to remove a clouded lens.

The operation takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye, is performed under topical anaesthesia (numbing eye drops — no injection, no general anaesthesia), and uses phacoemulsification to break up and aspirate the natural lens through an incision of just 2.2 to 2.4 mm. The foldable IOL is inserted through the same micro-incision and unfolds into position inside the capsular bag.

Because the artificial lens does not age, smart lens surgery provides a permanent correction that eliminates the need for future cataract surgery — a significant advantage for patients in their late 40s and 50s.

Trifocal vs EDOF Lenses: Which Is Right for You?

The choice of IOL determines how your vision performs at different distances. There are two main categories of premium lens:

Trifocal IOLs split incoming light into three focal points — near (reading, phone), intermediate (computer, cooking), and distance (driving, TV). They offer the highest chance of complete spectacle independence across all distances. The trade-off is a small risk of visual phenomena such as halos and glare around lights at night, which the brain typically adapts to within 3 to 6 months.

EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) IOLs use a different optical design that stretches a single focal point to create an elongated range of clear vision, rather than distinct focal points. They produce excellent distance and intermediate vision with very low levels of halos and glare. Near vision (small print at close range) is good but may require reading glasses in low light or for prolonged fine-detail work.

How to choose: If you want the best chance of never wearing glasses again, a trifocal lens (PanOptix or Rayner) is typically the strongest recommendation. If you drive frequently at night, work in low-light environments, or are particularly sensitive to visual disturbances, an EDOF lens (Vivity or Rayner EMV) may suit you better. Toric variants are required if you have 1.00 D or more of corneal astigmatism.

LASIK vs Smart Lens: Which Procedure Do I Need?

This is one of the most common questions MedProper receives, and the answer depends primarily on your age, prescription, and whether presbyopia has set in.

General guidance: If you are under 45 with a correctable prescription and no signs of cataract or presbyopia, LASIK or PRK will be the most cost-effective and least invasive option. If you are over 45, already using reading glasses, or have early lens opacity, a smart lens procedure addresses all of your vision needs in one surgery — and means you will never need cataract surgery in the future.

What to Expect: Treatment Day Timeline

Eye surgery at MedProper's partner centre follows a structured protocol designed for efficiency and patient comfort. Here is what a typical treatment day looks like.

LASIK / PRK Timeline

TimeStep
09:00Arrival and registration at the ophthalmology centre
09:15Final pre-operative measurements (topography, wavefront, pachymetry)
09:45Consultation with your operating ophthalmologist — review of plan and consent
10:00Anaesthetic drops applied, eyes prepared
10:15LASIK procedure — approximately 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes
10:30Post-operative check — immediate examination under slit lamp
10:45Protective eye shields fitted, eye drops prescribed, post-op instructions reviewed
11:00Discharged to hotel — rest with eyes closed for 4 to 6 hours
Next morningFollow-up examination at the centre — visual acuity check

Smart Lens Timeline

TimeStep
08:30Arrival and registration
08:45Pupil dilation drops administered (takes 30-45 minutes)
09:15Final biometry measurements confirmed

1 - 2 weeksNear-final visual acuity; neuroadaptation to trifocal/EDOF begins
1 - 3 monthsFull neuroadaptation — halos (if any) diminish significantly
Flying homeSafe from 48 hours after surgery

MedProper recommends staying in Istanbul for a minimum of 2 nights for LASIK and 3 nights for smart lens surgery. This allows time for the procedure, the next-day follow-up examination, and a buffer day in case of any concerns. We can arrange hotel accommodation at partnered properties near the ophthalmology centre.

Risks and Safety: Laser Eye Surgery in Turkey

Every surgical procedure carries some degree of risk, and it is important to understand these before making your decision. The good news is that modern refractive surgery has one of the best safety profiles in all of medicine.

Common Side Effects (Temporary)

  • Dry eyes: The most common side effect after LASIK, affecting 20 to 40 percent of patients in the first 3 months. Managed with preservative-free lubricating drops. Usually self-limiting.
  • Halos and glare: Particularly around lights at night. More common with larger pupils and higher corrections. Typically resolves within 3 to 6 months.
  • Light sensitivity: Mild photophobia lasting 1 to 3 days. Sunglasses recommended.
  • Minor fluctuations: Vision may vary slightly between mornings and evenings during the first few weeks.

Rare Complications

  • Undercorrection or overcorrection: Occurs in approximately 3 to 5 percent of cases. Can usually be addressed with an enhancement procedure after 3 months.
  • Flap complications (LASIK only): Wrinkles, displacement, or epithelial ingrowth under the flap. Extremely rare with modern femtosecond flap creation (less than 0.5%).
  • Corneal ectasia: Progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea after surgery. Very rare (estimated at 1 in 2,500 to 5,000) and preventable through proper screening.
  • Infection: Exceedingly rare with proper sterile technique (less than 1 in 10,000).

How MedProper Minimises Risk

  • Thorough screening: Every patient undergoes comprehensive diagnostic testing. If there is any doubt about suitability, we do not proceed.
  • JCI-accredited facility: Infection control, equipment maintenance, and clinical governance meet international standards.
  • Experienced surgeons: MedProper's partner ophthalmologists each have over 10,000 refractive procedures to their name.
  • Post-operative care: You will have at least one follow-up examination in Istanbul before being cleared to travel. MedProper also provides a post-operative care protocol to share with your local optometrist for ongoing monitoring.
  • Enhancement policy: If a clinically indicated enhancement is needed within 12 months, MedProper will facilitate this at no additional surgical fee — you would only need to cover your travel costs.

What Is Included in MedProper's Eye Surgery Service?

MedProper's eye surgery service is structured differently from our cosmetic surgery packages, reflecting the outpatient nature of these procedures.

Included in your price:
