Under local anaesthesia, you feel no pain during the procedure — only mild pressure and tugging. Under general anaesthesia, you are completely asleep. After surgery, most patients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate tightness, well-controlled with standard pain medication. Most patients stop needing painkillers within 3 to 5 days.

The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the complexity of the correction and whether one or both ears are treated. Most otoplasties at MedProper are bilateral (both ears).

Yes. Otoplasty results are permanent. Once the cartilage is reshaped and secured, the ears maintain their new position. The cartilage does not grow back or return to its previous shape. Revision rates at MedProper are below 2 per cent.

Otoplasty incisions are placed behind the ear, in the natural crease where the ear meets the head. The scars are hidden from view and fade to thin, pale lines within 6 to 12 months. They are virtually invisible, even with short hairstyles.

Yes. While otoplasty is often associated with children, it is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic procedures among adults. There is no upper age limit. Many adult patients have wanted the procedure for years and finally decide to have it done. The procedure and recovery are virtually identical for adults and children.

Otoplasty can be performed from age 5, when the ear cartilage has reached approximately 90 per cent of its adult size. Early correction is often recommended to prevent bullying and self-consciousness during school years. Most patients fly home 4 to 5 days after surgery. By this point, the initial bandage has been removed, the follow-up appointment is complete, and you are wearing the protective headband. Flying is safe and comfortable.

Light walking is encouraged from day one. Gentle exercise (gym, cycling, yoga) can resume at 3 to 4 weeks. Contact sports, swimming, and activities where the ears could be hit or folded should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks.

MedProper recommends wearing the protective headband 24 hours a day for the first 2 weeks, then at night only for an additional 4 weeks. The headband protects the ears during sleep and prevents accidental folding while the cartilage heals in its new position.

Yes. If only one ear protrudes or if there is significant asymmetry, unilateral otoplasty (one ear only) is an option. Your surgeon will assess both ears during the consultation and recommend whether one or both should be treated for the best symmetrical result.
