Gum curettage is a deep-cleaning procedure that removes infected soft tissue and bacterial deposits from within periodontal pockets beneath the gum line. While standard scaling addresses the tooth surface, curettage specifically targets the diseased inner lining of the gum pocket, promoting reattachment of healthy tissue to the tooth root. It is a key treatment for moderate periodontal (gum) disease.
By halting gum disease progression, curettage helps preserve teeth that might otherwise be lost to bone deterioration.
Curettage treats moderate gum disease without the need for flap surgery, reducing recovery time and discomfort.
Removing the infected pocket lining stimulates new connective tissue growth and tighter gum attachment.
Healthy gums are a prerequisite for successful crowns, veneers, and implants. Curettage prepares the groundwork.
Days 1-2
Initial Healing
Mild gum soreness and slight bleeding are expected. Use the prescribed antiseptic mouthwash and avoid vigorous brushing near treated areas.
Week 1
Tissue Recovery
Tenderness subsides. Gums begin to tighten and pink colour returns. Stick to soft foods if any discomfort persists.
Weeks 2-4
Gum Reattachment
Pocket depths reduce as gums heal and reattach to the tooth. A follow-up measurement confirms improvement.

Scaling removes calculus and plaque from the tooth surface and root. Curettage goes further by removing the infected soft tissue lining the inside of the gum pocket, which promotes deeper healing.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during treatment. Mild tenderness for a couple of days afterwards is managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Mild to moderate cases often require one session. If gum disease affects multiple quadrants, treatment may be split over two visits for comfort.
Curettage significantly reduces bacterial load and pocket depth, but long-term success depends on diligent home care and regular professional cleanings every 3-6 months.
