Surgical tooth extraction is a procedure used to remove teeth that cannot be taken out with standard forceps alone, typically because the tooth is broken at the gum line, has curved or fused roots, or is partially embedded in bone. The dentist makes a small incision in the gum and may remove a small amount of bone to access the tooth safely. Swelling subsides. Stitches dissolve or are removed. Gentle saltwater rinses keep the area clean. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods.

Weeks 2-4

Gum Closure

The surgical site closes and new tissue fills the extraction socket. Full bone healing continues beneath the surface over several months.

If the tooth cannot be grasped directly with forceps because it is broken, impacted, or root-complex, a gum incision and sometimes bone removal are needed. This makes it a surgical extraction.

During the procedure, no. You are fully anaesthetised. After the procedure, there is typically more swelling and soreness than a simple extraction, but this is manageable with medication and resolves within a week.

Most patients feel comfortable resuming desk work the next day. Avoid strenuous exercise for 3-5 days. Full social recovery takes about a week.
