What is Membrane?

A barrier membrane is a biocompatible, resorbable sheet placed over a bone graft site to protect the graft material and guide bone regeneration (guided bone regeneration, or GBR). The membrane prevents fast-growing soft tissue from invading the graft site, giving slower-growing bone cells time to regenerate the defect. How Does Membrane Work?

1After bone graft material is placed in the deficient area, the membrane is trimmed to the appropriate size and shape.
2The membrane is positioned over the graft, extending 2-3 mm beyond the defect edges on all sides.
3It is secured in place with tacking pins or sutures if necessary to prevent displacement.
4The gum flap is closed over the membrane and sutured. The membrane slowly resorbs over 4-6 months as bone regenerates beneath it.
