What is Membrane?
A barrier membrane is a biocompatible, resorbable sheet placed over a bone graft site to protect the graft material and guide bone regeneration (guided bone regeneration, or GBR). The membrane prevents fast-growing soft tissue from invading the graft site, giving slower-growing bone cells time to regenerate the defect. At MedProper Istanbul, collagen membranes are used for predictable, safe healing.
How Does Membrane Work?
- 1After bone graft material is placed in the deficient area, the membrane is trimmed to the appropriate size and shape.
- 2The membrane is positioned over the graft, extending 2-3 mm beyond the defect edges on all sides.
- 3It is secured in place with tacking pins or sutures if necessary to prevent displacement.
- 4The gum flap is closed over the membrane and sutured. The membrane slowly resorbs over 4-6 months as bone regenerates beneath it.
