Dental Surgery
Lateral window sinus elevation to create bone height for upper jaw implants
Is it safe?
Your hospital holds the same JCI accreditation as Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins. Verified by TEMOS for international patient safety.
Will the price change?
Your price is locked before you book. Surgery, hospital, hotel, transfers, aftercare — one number, no extras.
What if something goes wrong?
Mandatory insurance required by Turkish law. If a revision is needed — flights, hospital, surgeon — covered. You never pay twice.
Who's my surgeon?
Confirmed before you pay. Full credentials, specialisation, and patient results shared upfront. No last-minute switch.
What happens after I fly home?
24/7 WhatsApp with your coordinator. Scheduled video check-ups with your surgeon. 12 months, not 12 days.
An open sinus lift (lateral window technique) is a surgical procedure that elevates the sinus membrane from the inside of the upper jaw and places bone graft material beneath it, creating sufficient bone height for dental implant placement in the posterior upper jaw. When natural bone below the sinus is too thin for implants, this well-established technique predictably regenerates the needed volume. MedProper Istanbul's oral surgeons perform open sinus lifts routinely with high success rates.
Open sinus lift creates the bone volume needed for secure implant placement in the posterior upper jaw where bone is naturally thin.
This technique can add 8-12 mm of bone height, accommodating even standard-length implants.
Open sinus lift has a success rate exceeding 95% in published literature, making it one of the most predictable bone augmentation procedures.
At EUR 300 per sinus at MedProper, this complex procedure is available at a fraction of Western European costs.
Days 1-3
Post-Surgical Care
Expect cheek swelling and mild discomfort. Do not blow your nose for 2 weeks. Sneeze with your mouth open. Sleep with head elevated.
Weeks 1-2
Soft Tissue Healing
Stitches dissolve or are removed. Swelling subsides. Avoid strenuous exercise and air travel for 1-2 weeks after surgery.
Months 6-9
Bone Maturation
The graft matures into solid bone. A follow-up CBCT confirms sufficient volume and density for implant placement.
Duration
45-90 minutes per sinus
Hospital Stay
Outpatient clinic
Recovery
1-2 weeks initial; 6-9 months graft maturation
Permanence
Permanent
Anaesthesia
Local (sedation available)
Results Visible
6-9 months (by scan)
A closed sinus lift is a simpler procedure done through the implant socket, suitable when only 2-3 mm of additional bone is needed. An open sinus lift uses a lateral window to access the sinus, allowing much larger volume gains (5-12 mm) for cases with severe bone deficiency.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is painless during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is moderate, similar to a wisdom tooth extraction, and is managed well with prescribed medication.
If there is at least 4-5 mm of existing bone for initial implant stability, simultaneous sinus lift and implant placement may be possible. Otherwise, the graft must heal first and implants are placed in a second procedure.
The main risk is perforation of the sinus membrane (occurs in about 10-25% of cases), which is usually repaired during surgery. Infection and graft failure are rare. Following post-operative instructions (no nose blowing, no smoking) significantly reduces risks.
Typically two trips: the first for the sinus lift (3-5 days), the second for implant placement 6-9 months later (2-3 days). If implants are placed simultaneously, only one additional trip for the final crowns is needed.
